afterの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 æfter（〜の後に・背後に）が、現代英語 after になった。もともとは「後ろにある」という空間的な位置を表し、そこから時間の「後に」「後で」という意味へ広がった。
after は、場所なら「後ろに」、時間なら「後で」と考えると覚えやすい。after work は「仕事の後に」、after you は直訳の「あなたの後に」から「お先にどうぞ」という表現になる。
