ギリシャ語 βλᾰστός（芽・若枝） から作られた発生学の用語で、日本語では胞胚。受精卵が分裂を重ね、中に腔をもつ中空の球になった段階を指す。
βλᾰστός は -τός（状態を表す形容詞をつくる） を含む形で、「芽ばえたもの」という中身。生き物が形をとりはじめる最初の芽、というイメージがそのまま初期胚の名になった。
同じ要素は blastocyst（胚盤胞）・fibroblast（線維芽細胞）・osteoblast（骨芽細胞）に現れる。-blast は「まだ育ちきっていない、これから形になる細胞」。複数形は blastulae。
