古フランス語 ahuge（非常に大きい・強大な）が頭の a- を落として英語に入った語。その ahuge 自体の出どころは分かっていないという、由来のはっきりしない珍しい語である。
意味は単純に「巨大な」だが、great や large より話し手の驚きが乗るのが特徴。a huge success（大成功）・a huge difference（大きな違い）・huge amounts of data（膨大なデータ）のように、規模でも量でも程度でも使える万能の強調語である。
口語では「大好きだ」の意味でも使い、I'm a huge fan.（大ファンです）が定番。発音は「ヒュージ」で、頭の h をはっきり出すのが要点で、これを落とすと年齢を表す age に近づいてしまう。副詞は hugely（非常に）。
