古英語 norþ を経て現代の north になった語で、綴りはほとんど変わっていない。方角語なので意味の広がりは小さく、代わりに派生の作り方が体系的。ern / erly で形容詞、ward / wards で方向を表す語になる。
northeast / northwest の複合はさらに派生を重ねられ、northeastern・northeastward・northwesterly のように三層になることもある。風向きを表すときは northerly が「北から吹く」を意味し、方角の指す向きが逆転する点だけ注意したい。norther はその北風そのものを指す名詞。
