northernの語源と覚え方
覚え方
north（北）+ -ern（方角の名から形容詞をつくる）。中英語 northerne を受け継いだ形で、さらに古英語 norþerne = norþ（北・北へ）+ -erne（方角の形容詞をつくる） にさかのぼる。
古英語の時点ですでに「北の・北向きの」という形容詞ができあがっていた。the northern hemisphere（北半球）、northern lights（オーロラ）のように、地域や方向を表す。
同じ型で eastern・western・southern が並ぶ。方角の語 + -ern で形容詞という一組で覚えると、綴りの -ern を落とさずに済む。
