south（南）+ -ern（方角の形容詞を作る語尾）と捉えられる southern は、「南の、南部に関する」という意味。古英語にも sūþerne（南の）という形がある。the southern coast は南側の海岸で、島の地図の下側をなぞっていくと、どの範囲を指しているかが見える。
