ギリシャ語 γᾰστήρ（胃・腹）から来た gastr は、ほぼ医学専用の要素。形容詞は gastric（胃の）、炎症は -itis を付けて gastritis、切除は -ectomy で gastrectomy、内視鏡検査は -scopy で gastroscopy、人工的な開口は -stomy で gastrostomy と、後ろの要素が処置や症状を決める仕組みが徹底している。ホルモン名の gastrin もこの系統。
二つの器官をつなぐときは gastro の形になり、gastrointestinal（胃腸の）、gastroesophageal（胃食道の）、gastroenteritis（胃腸炎）、gastroenterology（消化器病学）、gastroenterologist（その専門医）と、部位を並べて長い語を作る。epigastric は epi-（上）が付いて「みぞおちの」。腹足類の gastropod（腹が足）、食通の gastronomic のように医学以外へ出た語もあるが、いずれも「腹」から読める。
