ラテン語 gastricus（胃の）= gaster（腹）+ -īcus（「〜に属する」意味の形容詞をつくる）。英語では主に医学用語として「胃の」を表す。

英語の連結形 gastro-（胃・腹） が同じ語で、gastritis（胃炎）・gastroenteritis（胃腸炎）・gastronomy（美食学）・gastropod（腹足類＝腹が足の貝）と並ぶ。gastr- を見たら「胃・腹」。

補足: gastric juice は胃液、gastric ulcer は胃潰瘍。日本語の「ガストロノミー」「ガストロバー」も同じ系統の語。
