覚え方
古フランス語 acolyt（侍祭）から。教会で司祭のそばに付き従い、蝋燭や器を運んで儀式を補佐する役の名だった。
そこから宗教色が薄れ、有力者や指導者に付き従う「側近・信奉者・取り巻き」を指すようになった。「祭壇のそばの付き人→つき従う者」と覚える。しばしば「自分の頭で考えず追従する人」という皮肉を含む。
