black（黒い）+ jack（男・やつ）。jack はごくありふれた男を指す語から、広く道具や物の名にも使われるようになり、黒いものを指す呼び名としていくつもの別物に付けられた。
カードの blackjack は、黒いジャックの絵札とエースがそろうと配当が出た昔の遊び方からの名。革や鉄をしこんだ「警棒」、樫の一種、黒くタールを塗った革の容器も blackjack と呼ばれた。
