carcassの語源と覚え方

アングロ・ノルマン語 carcois(死骸) から来た語で、肉を取ったあとの動物の胴体や、動物の死体を指す。
「中身が抜けて枠だけ残ったもの」という感覚が強く、そこから建物・船・車の「骨組み・残骸」にも使う。人間に使うとぞんざいな響きになるため、人の遺体はふつう body と言う。
補足: つづりは carcass と carcase の両方があり、アメリカ英語では carcass が普通。
