caro はシチリア語 caru（愛しい）、そこに us が付いた carusu は「少年」。この名が騎手たちの馬上競技 carrousel の名になり、輪を描いて回る隊形から遊園地の回転木馬へ移った。
芯は「同じところをぐるぐる回る仕掛け」。だから空港の baggage carousel（手荷物のターンテーブル）や、部品を載せて回る装置も carousel と呼ぶ。
イギリス英語では回転木馬を merry-go-round とも言う。英語での綴りは r が一つの carousel が普通。
