フランス語 concordat（協約・政教条約）から。とくにローマ教皇庁と国家が結び、その国での教会の地位や権利を定めた条約を指す。
the Concordat of 1801（ナポレオンと教皇庁の政教条約）のように歴史用語として出てくることが多く、転じて一般の「正式な取り決め」にも使う。
