dich（二つに）＋otomy（切る）で、一つのものを真っ二つに切り分けること。そこから「二分法」、さらに「重なりを許さず二つに割り切る見方」を指すようになった。
a false dichotomy（誤った二分法）は、本当は二択でないものを二択に見せる詭弁のこと。the dichotomy between mind and body（心と体の二分）のようにも使う。
otomy は「切ること」で、anatomy（切り開く＝解剖学）や appendectomy（虫垂切除）まで一続きにつながる。
