覚え方
foss は「掘る」、il が「〜できる・〜される」を添える。ラテン語 fossilis は「掘り出せるもの」で、地中から掘り出される古い生物の痕跡、つまり化石を指すようになった。
石のようになった骨や貝殻などを表す地質学の基本語で、fossil fuel(化石燃料)も「掘り出して得る燃料」である。
比喩では、時代遅れで変わらない人や物を fossil と呼ぶこともある。foss に「掘る」を読み取れば、意味の芯は固まる。
