覚え方
ギリシャ語 μῦθος(言葉・話・物語)を借り入れた語が myth である。人々に語り継がれる話を指し、特に神々や英雄、世界の成り立ちなどを説明する伝統的な物語を表す。
その後、myth は必ずしも神話に限らず、根拠が薄くても広く信じられている「通説・誤解」という意味でも使われるようになった。物語としての myth と、「それは神話にすぎない」という否定的な用法を区別するとよい。
再建形 *mewHdʰ-(不平を言う・熟考する)とも結び付けられる。myth を見たら、言葉として語られ、考えられ、受け継がれた物語という中心イメージから、神話や誤解へ意味を広げて覚えるとよい。
