アングロノルマン語 espleen が英語に入って spleen。血液をこし、古い赤血球を壊す臓器、脾臓を指す。
この語には「不機嫌・癇癪」という別の顔があり、vent one's spleen（うっぷんをぶちまける）という言い方に残っている。臓器が感情の座と考えられていた時代の用法が、成句の形で化石のように生き延びたもの。
形容詞 splenetic（怒りっぽい）も同じ系統で、こちらは医学の意味よりも「不機嫌な」の意味で使われる。
