覚え方
中英語 stilte がそのまま stilt になった語。足に付けて歩く竹馬や、建物を地面から持ち上げる支柱を指し、たいてい複数形 stilts で使う。
動詞では「杭で持ち上げる」。その過去分詞から来た形容詞 stilted は、本来「高く持ち上げた」で、そこから話し方や文章が「不自然に気取った・ぎこちない」意味に広がった。
水辺の鳥セイタカシギを stilt と呼ぶのも同じ語で、脚が竹馬のように細く長いことから付いた名前。
