覚え方
ラテン語 ad(〜へ・〜に向かって)が示す「寄せる」働きに、letter(文字)と同族の要素が続いた語。「同じ文字を互いに寄せ合わせること」から、語頭の音をそろえる修辞技法「頭韻」を指すようになった。
literal(文字どおりの)・literature(文字で書かれたもの)と同じ「文字」の仲間だと気づけば、alliteration=文字(音)をそろえることと読める。Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers のように、語頭の子音をそろえる技法を言う。
