アメリカ西部に生息する小型で成長が遅いマツで、イガイガマツに似ている。プレート状のチョコレートブラウンの樹皮と、5本ずつ束になった短い針葉を持つ。円錐形の樹冠は、成長すると荒くねじれる。冷たい半砂漠の山頂で5000年も生きる世界最古の植物。
