古英語 blīþe（楽しい・穏やかな） を受け継ぐ語で、bliss（至福）と同じ *bʰlī- の系統。もとは「晴れやかで機嫌がよい」。
現代では、blithe spirit（陽気な心）のような古風で詩的な「快活な」用法と、blithe disregard（あっけらかんとした無視）のように「深く考えない・軽率な」という含みの用法が並ぶ。副詞 blithely は「けろりと・平気で」。屈託のなさが良く出れば陽気、悪く出れば軽率と二面で押さえる。
