ラテン語 callum（硬い皮膚）をそのまま借りた語。摩擦や圧迫を受け続けて厚く硬くなった皮膚、いわゆる「たこ・まめ」を指す。

医学では骨折部に新しくできる「仮骨」、植物学では傷口をふさぐ「カルス（癒傷組織）」も callus。共通するのは「刺激に応えて硬く盛り上がってきたもの」で、守るために厚くなる、という発想が一貫している。

複数形はラテン語式の calli と英語式の calluses の両方が使われる。心が硬くなるほうは形容詞 callous。

意味	胼胝たこ処タコ a thickened, hardened area of skin due to continuous friction or pressure.
例文	He developed a callus on his hand from manual labor. 彼は手作業で胼胝を作った。 Calluses can form on the feet from wearing tight shoes. きつい靴を履くと足に胼胝ができる。
