censor（公の内容を検閲する役人）+ -ship（地位・制度を表す名詞を作る） で「検閲という制度・行為」。
censor の背景にある *ḱens-（宣する・告げる） は「公に判定を言い渡す」イメージ。ローマの censor は市民の登録と風紀の監督を担う役人で、そこから「内容を検分して可否を言い渡す」役目の語になった。press censorship（報道検閲）、self-censorship（自主規制）。
同じ系統に census（国勢調査）・censure（公の非難）がある。似た形の censor（検閲する）と sensor（センサー）は無関係なので綴りに注意。
