columnarの語源と覚え方

ラテン語 columnāris（柱の形をした）= columna（円柱）+ -āris（〜に関する）。英語では column（柱）+ -ar とも読め、「柱のように細長く立った」形を言う形容詞。
地学の columnar joint（柱状節理）、生物の columnar epithelium（円柱上皮）のように、専門用語で使うことが多い。
columna の背景は *kelH-（高くなる・そびえる）。column（柱・新聞のコラム）・culminate（頂点に達する）と同じ「高くそびえる」系統。
