ラテン語 cortex（樹皮・外皮）が形を変えずに英語へ入った語。木を包む皮のように、臓器や組織の外側の層を指す。

大脳の外層が cerebral cortex（大脳皮質）、腎臓なら renal cortex、植物なら皮層。複数形はラテン語式の cortices がよく使われ、形容詞は cortical。

同族に cork（コルク樫の樹皮から作る栓）がある。cortex はいつも「外側の層」で、内側の芯を指す語と対になる。
