drowse（うとうとする）+ -y（〜の性質の） で「眠気を帯びた」。drowse は目を開けていられずこくりこくりする状態を指し、そこに -y がついて「そういう状態にある」という形容詞になった。
sleepy が「眠りたい」なら、drowsy は頭がぼんやりして反応が鈍い方に寄る。薬の注意書きにある This medicine may make you drowsy.（眠気を催すことがあります）は定番表現。-y は状態を表す形容詞を作ると押さえ、cloudy・noisy と同じ棚に入れて覚えるとよい。
