equ は「等しくする・平らにする」、ator は「〜するもの」。後期ラテン語 aequator は昼と夜を等しく分ける線を指し、地球を南北に二等分してぐるりと一周する線、すなわち赤道になった。
綴りを見たら equal（等しい）と同じ equ を思い出し、「等しく分けるもの」と読めばよい。地図ではこの線を境に北緯と南緯が切り替わる。
形容詞は equatorial（赤道の・赤道付近の）で、どちらも「地球の中央を横切る線」が出発点である。
