elevate（持ち上げる・昇進させる）+ -or（何かをする人や物を表す） で「持ち上げるもの」＝昇降機。行為者を表す -or が、人ではなく機械に付いた例である。
アメリカ英語の語で、イギリス英語では同じ装置を lift と呼ぶ。take the elevator to the third floor（エレベーターで3階へ行く）のように使い、穀物を積み上げて貯蔵する grain elevator（穀物倉庫）、飛行機の機首を上下させる elevator（昇降舵）にも同じ語を用いる。上へ持ち上げる装置という共通点で結ばれている。
