gallonの語源と覚え方

器を指す俗ラテン語の語から、後期ラテン語 galum（ワインの量の単位）、古ノルマン語 galun（液量の単位）を経て、今の「ガロン」になった。入れ物を指す語が、中身の量を測る単位の名になった筋道である。
頭の gal- を「器」に結びつけ、「決まった大きさの器 1 つ分の量」と考えると覚えやすい。茶わん 1 杯、バケツ 1 杯のように、器で量を数える感覚に近い。
