latent（隠れている・活動していない）+ -ency（状態や性質を表す名詞を作る） で「隠れている状態」。背後にあるのは *leh₂-（隠れている） で、表に出ずに潜んでいるという核が全体を貫いている。
医学では発症前の「潜伏（期）」、心理学では表に現れない潜在的な段階を指す。ウイルスが症状を出さずに体内にとどまっている状態が latency である。
IT では要求を出してから応答が返るまでの「隠れた待ち時間」＝遅延を指し、low latency（低遅延）・network latency のように使う。通信量の帯域 bandwidth が「太さ」なら、latency は「反応の速さ」。latent（隠れている）→ latency（隠れている時間）と結び付けて覚えたい。
