peculiar はラテン語 pecūliāris（私的な・個人の）に由来し、pecūlium（私有財産・個人の資産）+ -āris（関係や所属を示す形容詞語尾）という構成で理解できる。もともとは「個人に属する、私有の」という意味だったものが、「その人だけに属する特有の」へ進み、さらに「普通とは違う、特異な・奇妙な」へ発展した。
pecūlium の背景にある *peḱ- は、家畜や財産を表す。昔の個人資産として家畜が重要だったことを思い浮かべ、peculiar = 自分だけの財産のように特有なと覚えるとよい。peculiar feature は「そのもの特有の特徴」、peculiar behavior は「普通と違う行動」と読める。
