curious は、ラテン語 cūriōsus（注意深い・知りたがる）にさかのぼる。反対の incūriōsus（不注意な・無関心な）には、n̥-（〜でない）という要素が見え、注意深く観察する *kʷeys- と結びつく。「よく見る、気を配る」ことが、細部を知りたがる好奇心へ発展した。
curious は「知りたがる」だけでなく、「珍しい・ちょっと変わった」という意味にもなる。curiosity（好奇心）、curiously（興味深いことに・奇妙なことに）も同じ仲間で、curi- を見たら、注意深く調べたがる様子を思い出すとよい。
