覚え方
ラテン語 intersum（間にある・隔たっている）にさかのぼる。inter-（間に）+ sum（ある） で、「その物事と自分とのあいだに関わりがある」ということ。sum の芯は *h₁es-（ある） と *bʰuH-（なる・生じる） で、英語の be 動詞そのものである。
「自分と関わりがある」が二方向に育った。心の側では「興味を持っている」、金の側では「利害・利息の関係がある」。be interested in music（音楽に興味がある）と an interested party（利害関係者）が同じ語なのはこのためである。
注意したいのは interested（人が興味を持っている）と interesting（物が興味を引く） の別。I'm interesting. と言うと「私は面白い人間だ」になってしまう。
