覚え方
interest はラテン語 intersum（間に位置する・関係する） にさかのぼり、inter-（間に・相互に）+ sum（ある・いる） と分けられる。「自分と事柄との間に関係がある」ことから、「関心・興味」になった。また、関係がある事柄は人にとって重要なので、「重要性」という意味も生じ、さらにお金に関係する分け前から「利子」の意味へ広がった。
sum は *h₁es-（ある・いる） と *bʰuH-（なる・生じる） に関係する。present（前にある→現在の）や absent（離れていていない）など、存在や位置を表す語と結びつけると覚えやすい。interest は「自分との間に関係があるもの」だから、興味にも重要性にも利子にもなると捉えるとよい。
