英語 wonder は古英語 wundor(驚くべき出来事・超自然的奇蹟) に由来する。材料からはさらに確実な分解や語源は確認できないため、他の語のように接頭辞や部品に分けて覚えるより、「普通では説明しにくい出来事」というまとまりで捉えるのがよい。
