ラテン語 speculor（見張る・観察する・偵察する）から。もとは specula（見張り台・物見）で、「やぐらに登って遠くを見渡す」が原義。-ate はラテン語系の動詞語尾。

遠くを見晴らして先を読む、から「（確証なしに）推測する・思索する」。同時に経済では「先を読んで張る」＝「投機する」。名詞 speculation が「憶測」と「投機」の両方を指すのはこのため。

形容詞 speculative は「推測に基づく」「投機的な」。spec を見たら「見る」で、spectator・inspect・prospect と同じ流れに置ける。
