commitの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 committō（結びつける・委ねる・犯す）= con-（共に）+ mittō（送る）。「一緒に送り込む・手元から送り出す」が原義。
送り出して相手に預ける →「委ねる・（施設に）送る」、自分自身を差し出す →「約束する・専念する」、行為を世に送り出す →「（罪を）犯す」。commit a crime と commit to a plan が同じ語なのはこのため。名詞 commitment は「自分を預けた状態」＝献身・確約。
mittō（送る）は submit（下へ送る→提出する）・transmit・permit・mission と同じ。mit / mis は「送る」、前の接頭辞で方向を読む。
