古英語 sendan（送る）を受け継ぐ基本動詞。send は、人・物・情報を、今いる所から行き先へ向かわせることを表す。send a parcel は小包を送ること、send a message はメッセージを送ること。手で運ぶ物でも通信で伝える内容でも、送り出す側から相手へ向かう動きが共通する。
Send me the photo. は「その写真を私に送って」で、Send the photo to me. とも言える。人を先に置くか、送る物の後に to で相手を示すかの違いである。send someone home は人を帰宅させること。過去形・過去分詞の sent も、sent me a photo（写真を送ってくれた）のように、送り手・送る物・届け先を一組にすると使いやすい。
