ラテン語 dīrēctus（まっすぐな・直接の）は、dīs-（離れて・ばらばらに）+ rēctus（まっすぐな・正しい） と分けて捉えられる。ばらばらのものをまっすぐ整えるイメージから、「まっすぐな」「寄り道のない直接の」、さらに「方向を示して導く」という意味へ発展した。
rēctus の背景にある *h₃reǵ-（まっすぐにする）は、方向や状態を正しく整える感覚を持つ。direct は、線や道が直接的である場合だけでなく、人を目的地へ案内したり、行動を指示したりする場合にも使われる。
