re-（再び）+ direct（向ける・導く）。「向きを付け直す」から「向け直す・転送する」。
direct は「まっすぐに導く」で、*h₃reǵ-（まっすぐにする）につながる。correct（正す）・regular（規則的な）と同じ「まっすぐ」の仲間。
Your call will be redirected to our customer service team.（お電話はカスタマーサービスにおつなぎします）、Mail will be redirected to the new address.（郵便物は新住所に転送されます）。ウェブページの「リダイレクト」も同じ語。
