古英語 þurh（〜を通って）に由来し、印欧祖語 *terh₂-（越える・通り抜ける）につながる。þurh（通って）という形には、入口から出口まで何かの中を横切る感覚がある。
そこから through は「〜を通じて」「〜を通り抜けて」を表し、さらに過程を最後まで通り抜けたことから「完了して」の意味にも発展した。*terh₂-（越える・通り抜ける）を思い出し、through を見たら「中を越えて向こう側へ」と読むのがコツ。
