中英語 finishen（完成させる） から来た finish の過去分詞・形容詞形で、「終わった・仕上がった」。作業が最後まで行き着いた状態を表す。

人を主語にすると文脈で意味が分かれる。I'm finished with my homework.（宿題を終えた）は完了だが、He's finished.（あいつはもう終わりだ）は再起不能の含み。主語が人のときは前後を見る必要がある。

名詞の finish は「終わり」だけでなく「表面の仕上げ・塗り」も指し、a matte finish（つや消し仕上げ）のように使う。finished product は「完成品」である。
