古フランス語 drecier（立ち上がる）が英語 dress のもと。*dis-（離れて）と *h₃reǵ-（まっすぐにする・正す）から成り、まっすぐに整えることだった。
「整える」から「身なりを整える」、さらに「服を着せる・着る」へ。dressed は「服を着ている」で、well-dressed は装いの整った、dressed up は着飾った状態。
サラダの dressing も、傷の手当ての dressing も「整える」から出ている。*h₃reǵ- の系統には correct（正す）・direct（まっすぐ向ける）・regular がある。
