中英語 polishen（磨く・つやを出す） を受け継いだ polish の過去分詞形。物の表面を擦って光らせた状態が原義。
そこから人や技能についていう「磨きのかかった＝洗練された」へ広がった。polished manners（洗練された物腰）、a polished performance（完成度の高い演技）のように、荒削りな部分を落として仕上げてあるという含みがある。対義は rough（荒削りな）・unpolished。
名詞の polish は「つや出し剤・磨き」で、nail polish（マニキュア）もこれ。なお同じ綴りの Polish（ポーランドの）は無関係の別語で、大文字と発音「ポウリッシュ」で区別する。
