completeの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 compleō（満たす・完成させる）= con-（共に・完全に）+ pleō（満たす）。空いている部分をすべて満たし、全体を一つに仕上げるイメージが原義にある。
そこから「完成させる」、さらに「欠けたところのない・完全な」という意味へ発展した。英語 complete は、作業を完了する場合にも、完全な状態を表す場合にも使う。
pleō の語根 *pleh₁-（満たす）は fill・full と同系で、ple／pl を見たら「満たす」と覚えるとよい。con- を含む connect や combine では「共に」の感覚も手がかりになる。
