solu はラテン語 solvō（解く・放つ）、ab は「切り離して」。結び目を解いて縛りから離す absolvō から生まれた語で、しがらみのない状態が芯になる。
何にも結びつけられていない、つまりほかの条件を必要としないので「無条件の・絶対的な」、欠けるところのない「完全な」へ広がった。
absolute authority（絶対的な権力）、absolute certainty（完全な確実性）のように、比較や例外を許さない強い意味で使う。solution と同じ solu を見たら「ほどく」と読む。
