覚え方

英語 abstract + -ion。中英語 abstraccyone（世俗を離れた隠遁・修道生活） に遡り、その材料はラテン語の分詞 abstractus（引き離された・遠ざけられた） と中期フランス語 abstraction（引き離すこと）。

原義は「引き離すこと」。もとは俗世から心を引き離す修行を指したが、やがて「事物から性質だけを引き離して取り出す」思考を意味し、哲学・数学・プログラミングの「抽象（化）」になった。「放心・上の空」という語義も、心がその場から引き離された状態。

abstractus の系統は extract（引き出す）・subtract（引き去る）・tractor（引くもの）と同族で、tract は「引く」。abstract は「具体から引き離された」と読める。
