thing は、古英語 þing「もの、事柄」を受け継ぐ語。「物」だけでなく、出来事や問題、考えなど、話題にするものを幅広く指せる。名前をまだ言わない場合や、いろいろな対象をまとめて述べる場合に役立つ。手で触れられる物だけに絞らないことが、使い方を広げるコツだ。
What's that thing? は、目の前にある物を指して「あれは何？」と尋ねる言い方。I have three things to do. なら、三つの用事があるということで、物体を三つ数えているわけではない。The important thing is to start. の thing は、大切な点や事柄を受け持つ。文の中で何の名前を代わりに引き受けているのかを考えると、訳を「物」に固定せず自然に読める。
