thing は、さらに古くは「適した時、決まった時」を指したとされ、そこから集まり、そこで話す議題へ移り、やがて物事全般を表すようになった。古英語 þing はすでに「もの、事柄」の意味を持つ。話し合う案件が出発点だと知ると、形のある物に限らない理由が分かる。
What's that thing? は目の前の物を指す言い方だが、I have three things to do. は三つの用事で、物体を三つ数えているわけではない。The important thing is to start. の thing は、大切な点を受け持つ。文の中で何を指しているのかを考えると、訳を「物」に固定せず自然に読める。
