baritoneの語源と覚え方

bari はギリシャ語 βᾰρῠ́ς（重い・低い）、tone は τόνος（張り）。合わせて「重く張った音」で、テノールとバスの間にあたる男声の中音域を指す。
前半の「重い」は grave（重々しい）や gravity（重力）と、後半の「張る」は tone（音調）や tension（張り）と同じ流れにある。前が重さ、後ろが音、と分ければ迷わない。
補足: 声域だけでなく、その音域を担当する楽器も指す。baritone saxophone のような使い方になる。
