ラテン語 abnōrmis = ab-（離れて）+ nōrma（直角定規・規準）。nōrma は大工が直角を測る道具で、そこから「あるべき形・基準」を表すようになり、その基準から離れているのが abnormal。
nōrma は norm（規範）・normal（標準どおりの）・enormous（規準を外れた→巨大な）に残る。ab- の「離れて」は abduct（連れ去る）・absent（離れている）と同じで、後ろに「基準」が来るか「導く」が来るかで意味が決まる。
